Demingova nagrada uspostavljena je 1951. godine u čast istaknutog gurua kvalitete Williama Edwardsa Deminga koji spada među najzaslužnije osobe koje su pridonijele razvoju kvalitete. Nagradu je osnovao JUSE - Japanese Union of Scientists and Engineers (Savez japanskih znanstvenika i inženjera). Postoje dvije kategorije nagrade, to su "Deming Prize" koja je namijenjena za dodjelu zaslužnim pojedincima u radu i zaslugama iz područja kvalitete i "Deming Application Prize" koja je namijenjena za dodjelu zaslužnim organizacijama iz područja kvalitete.
Svrha dodjeljivanja Demingove nagrade je odavanje priznanja najzaslužnijim pojednicima i organizacijama iz područja upravljanja kvalitetom. Kriteriji za dodjelu Demingove nagrade prema kojima se ona dodjeljuje su vezani uz organizaciju i menadžment, politiku kvalitete, izobrazbu, prikupljanje i korištenje informacija o kvaliteti, normizaciji, planiranju i rezultatima. Nagrada se dodjeljuje svake godine.
